War Service May 1861 Col. of 2nd Connecticut, First Bull Run, Ft Pulaski, Secessionville, April 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, served around Charleston, commanded 1st Divn/X Corps against Battery Wagner, commanded X Corps in Petersburg campaign, Ft Fisher, January 1865 promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers, January 1865 promoted Brig. Gen. in Regular Army, Carolinas campaign.
   
Post War Career Army service, commanded a department in the West, fought Indians.
